Quick answer: The best Kybella candidates are adults at or near a healthy weight who have a pocket of fat under the chin that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise, and reasonably firm skin. Kybella isn’t a weight-loss treatment, and it won’t tighten loose skin. Most people need two to four sessions spaced at least a month apart. |
A full or “double” chin is one of the most stubborn areas of fat. It can show up even in people who are slim and active, often because of genetics. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable that removes that fat without surgery. This guide explains who it works best for, what treatment and swelling are really like, and the alternatives if Kybella isn’t the right fit.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a prescription injectable made of deoxycholic acid, a synthetic version of a molecule your body makes to break down dietary fat. The FDA approved it in 2015 to improve moderate to severe fullness under the chin (called submental fat) in adults.
When it’s injected into the fat under the chin, Kybella destroys the membranes of fat cells. Your body then clears those cells away over the following weeks. Because adult fat cells that are destroyed don’t grow back, the result in that area is long-lasting.
Signs you’re a good candidate
You’re likely a strong candidate if:
- You’re an adult with fullness under the chin that you can pinch.
- You’re at or close to a healthy, stable weight.
- The fullness has stayed despite diet and exercise.
- Your skin under the chin still has reasonable elasticity.
- You’d rather avoid surgery and anesthesia.
- You can plan around a few days of noticeable swelling.
Who isn’t a good fit
Kybella is the wrong tool, or needs extra caution, if:
- The main issue is loose skin, not fat. Kybella removes fat but doesn’t tighten skin. Removing fat from under very lax skin can make the skin look looser.
- You’re planning significant weight loss. It makes sense to reach your goal first. If you have more weight to lose overall, our medical weight loss program is a better starting point.
- The fullness comes from something else, such as an enlarged thyroid, enlarged glands or a weak chin bone structure. Your provider will check for this at your consultation.
- You have trouble swallowing now or have had it before.
- You have an infection in the treatment area.
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Kybella hasn’t been studied in these groups.
How many Kybella sessions will I need?
Most people need two to four sessions. The FDA label allows up to six, spaced at least one month apart. How many you need depends on how much fat there is and how you respond.
You’ll usually see the first improvement about four to six weeks after a session, once the swelling is gone and your body has cleared the treated fat. Your provider will reassess before each session.
What treatment day is like
- Your provider marks a small grid on the area under your chin to place each injection evenly.
- Ice or a numbing cream is often used first.
- A series of small injections into the fat under the chin. The session usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
- Burning sensation. A warm or burning feeling for 15 to 30 minutes is normal and a sign the product is working.
Swelling: what to really expect
Swelling is the most common side effect, and it’s the part people are least prepared for. After the first session especially, it can look like a pronounced “bullfrog” swelling under the chin.
When | What’s normal |
Days 1 to 3 | Noticeable swelling, tenderness, possible bruising and numbness |
Days 4 to 7 | Swelling starts to go down. Many people feel comfortable in public again |
Weeks 2 to 4 | Numbness and firmness gradually fade |
Weeks 4 to 6 | Visible slimming as the treated fat is cleared |
Later sessions usually swell less than the first. Plan the first one at least a week away from photos or big events.
Less common side effects
Most side effects are temporary: swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and firmness. Less common, but important to know:
- An uneven smile or weakness in the lower lip. This can happen if the nerve near the jawline is affected. It usually resolves on its own, but it’s why careful mapping and anatomy knowledge matter.
- Trouble swallowing, usually linked to swelling. Report this right away.
Choose a provider who treats this area often and can talk you through the risks for your anatomy.
Are Kybella results permanent?
The fat cells Kybella destroys are gone for good, so once you reach your result, you shouldn’t need maintenance treatment. The remaining fat cells in your body can still grow if you gain significant weight, so keeping a stable weight helps protect the result.
Alternatives to Kybella
If Kybella isn’t the best fit, other options can improve the jawline and chin area:
- PDO thread lift: lifts mildly loose skin along the jawline. See PDO thread lifts.
- Chin and jawline filler: sometimes a “double chin” is partly a weak chin. Adding projection with dermal fillers can sharpen the profile.
- Body contouring: non-invasive treatments can target fat and skin laxity in some areas. See body contouring.
- Surgical liposuction: usually suits larger amounts of fat or when you want results in one procedure.

Frequently asked questions
Does Kybella work on other areas?
Kybella is FDA approved only for fat under the chin. Using it elsewhere is off-label, and results and risks in other areas are less well studied.
How soon will I see Kybella results?
Most people see a difference four to six weeks after a session. The full result usually shows after the last session.
Does Kybella hurt?
You’ll feel the injections and a burning sensation afterward that usually fades within half an hour. Ice and numbing cream help.
Can I go back to work after Kybella?
Most people can, but swelling is noticeable for a few days, especially after the first session. Many people schedule it before a weekend.
Will Kybella leave loose skin?
In good candidates with reasonable skin elasticity, the skin usually adjusts. If your skin is already loose, ask about combining Kybella with a skin tightening or lifting treatment.
